What FSC certification covers on outdoor furniture

FSC certification is the most-cited sustainable forestry certification globally, run by the Forest Stewardship Council. On outdoor furniture, FSC certification means the wood — typically teak — is sourced from forests managed to FSC's environmental, social, and economic standards. The certification has two layers:

• Forest Management certification — the forest of origin is FSC-certified.
• Chain-of-Custody certification — every entity that handles the wood from forest to finished piece is FSC-certified, with documented traceability at each link.

The certification is renewable and audited. A brand's FSC chain-of-custody is verifiable at the FSC public database by certificate code. For US trade specification, the certificate code should appear on the invoice and the FSC label on the finished piece.

1. Request certificate code at quote. The code appears on the FSC certificate and is repeated on the invoice and FSC label.
2. Verify at the FSC public database (info.fsc.org/certificate.php). Enter the code; the database returns the certificate holder, scope, and validity dates.
3. Confirm scope covers the SKU specified. Some certificates cover only specific product categories; confirm the certificate scope includes the SKU on the invoice.
4. Verify validity dates. Certificates renew on a 5-year cycle. A certificate that expired and was renewed under a new code is fine; an expired-and-not-renewed certificate is a disqualification.
5. Confirm label on the piece matches the invoice. The FSC label on the finished piece should cite the same code as the certificate.

FSC and LEED Material and Resources credits

FSC documentation contributes to LEED v4 and v4.1 Material and Resources credits, specifically:

• MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Sourcing of Raw Materials. FSC certified products contribute at 100% of their cost toward the certified content threshold.
• MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Environmental Product Declarations. Separate from FSC but commonly bundled in the European premium documentation package.

For LEED-registered projects, request the FSC documentation and EPD documentation as a package at quote stage. The European premium outdoor brands supply both as standard; the documentation is the standard closeout package, not a custom request.

Red flags and certification mistakes

• "FSC" label with no certificate code. The FSC mark requires a license code. A bare "FSC" label is not a valid claim.
• Expired certificate that was not renewed. Certificates renew on a 5-year cycle. An expired-and-not-renewed certificate is a disqualification.
• Certificate scope does not cover the SKU. Some certificates are SKU-line-specific. Confirm the scope.
• Certificate holder mismatch. The certificate should be held by the brand (or a documented chain-of-custody partner), not by an unrelated entity.
• "Sustainable teak" or "responsibly sourced" without FSC documentation. These are marketing terms; FSC is the verifiable certification.

Brand-by-brand FSC commitment depth

FSC certification depth varies substantially across the seven brands listed. A "FSC-certified" claim from one brand can mean catalog-wide FSC 100%; from another it can mean Mix Credit on a single SKU. For LEED Platinum or BREEAM Outstanding submissions, the difference is the documentation pathway.

What the depth means for the project

• FSC 100%: all of the wood content in the specific product is from FSC-certified forests. Highest credit weight in LEED, BREEAM, LBC.
• FSC Mix Credit: a documented percentage of the wood content is FSC-certified; the rest is FSC Controlled Wood (legal harvest documented but not FSC-certified). Lower credit weight in rating systems; check the specific submission rules.
• FSC Recycled: salvage / reclaimed wood with chain-of-custody back to the salvage source. Highest credit weight where reclaimed content is the spec intent (Living Building Challenge, hospitality sustainability scorecards).

For a LEED Platinum-targeting hospitality project, specify FSC 100% brands (Barlow Tyrie, Gloster, Skagerak teak, Ethnicraft outdoor teak, Weishäupl). For a project where FSC is one input among many in a broader spec, FSC Mix Credit brands (Unopiù, Tribù select collections) are acceptable; confirm the specific submission's credit calculation.

Beyond teak: FSC on ipe, accoya, eucalyptus, oak

FSC certification is not limited to teak. For US outdoor projects where teak is the wrong material specification (mountain residential, freeze-thaw, lower budget tier), FSC certification on alternative outdoor woods carries the same rating-system credit weight as FSC teak. FSC ipe (Brazilian walnut)

• Where it fits: Phoenix, Albuquerque, Salt Lake high-altitude residential where teak cracks in low-humidity cycles. Decking, benches, structural outdoor.
• Brands with FSC ipe outdoor catalog: Roda select collections, Skagerak select benches, US-side specialists.
• Service life: 25-50 years with annual oil treatment for color retention (silvering otherwise).

FSC accoya (acetylated radiata pine)

• Where it fits: Northern European premium where ipe carbon footprint is an ESG concern. Decking, outdoor furniture frames, architectural outdoor elements.
• Brands with FSC accoya outdoor: limited European outdoor catalog as of 2026; growing supplier base.
• Service life: 50+ years in above-ground service per Accoya certification.

FSC eucalyptus (mountain ash, jarrah, karri)

• Where it fits: budget tier outdoor where FSC teak prices out of scope. Decking, benches, picnic-grade dining.
• Brands with FSC eucalyptus outdoor: mid-tier European houses, broad US-side trade catalog. Not premium European outdoor.
• Service life: 15-25 years depending on species and treatment.

FSC outdoor-grade oak (white oak, English oak)

• Where it fits: Northern European residential, heritage residential where oak is part of the design language. Skagerak Plank series, select Ethnicraft collections.
• Service life: 20-35 years with sealer maintenance.

FSC red cedar (Western red cedar)

• Where it fits: Pacific Northwest residential, US-domestic spec requirements. Less common in premium European outdoor.
• Service life: 20-30 years in moist climates with light sealer maintenance.

For projects where the FSC documentation is the sustainability requirement but the design intent does not specifically require teak, expand the brand short-list to include FSC ipe and FSC accoya alternatives. The LEED, BREEAM, and LBC credit weight is identical; the design palette options widen substantially.

Common FSC spec mismatches in US trade

Five FSC specification mismatches recur in US trade outdoor procurement. Each is a recoverable problem at brand short-list and an unrecoverable problem at order.

1. LEED Platinum target with FSC Mix Credit brand specified. The Mix Credit contribution to the materials credit calculation is lower than FSC 100%. The submission scrapes the credit line but cannot achieve it at the percentage. Resolution: specify FSC 100% brand (Barlow Tyrie, Gloster, Skagerak teak) at brand short-list, not at order revision.
2. FSC requirement on aluminum frame with teak inserts. Some specifications require FSC on the entire piece, including the wood inserts within a primarily aluminum frame. Mixed-material premium outdoor (Cane-line, Tribù, B&B Italia) may meet aluminum spec but lack FSC on the wood inserts. Resolution: clarify at brand short-list whether FSC applies to the wood content of mixed-material pieces.
3. FSC Mix Credit calculated against total project value instead of specific SKU. Mix Credit is a per-SKU calculation, not a project-level average. The submission cannot use other FSC content elsewhere to substitute for Mix Credit on this SKU.
4. FSC Recycled spec'd without confirming the salvage source. Reclaimed teak from "old growth" or "decommissioned structures" without documented salvage source does not qualify for FSC Recycled credit. The chain back to the salvage source must be documented.
5. FSC documentation requested at delivery instead of at order. The supplier can produce FSC documentation for legitimately FSC-content SKUs; cannot retroactively certify non-FSC content. A spec change to FSC after order is essentially a new order at FSC pricing and FSC lead time.
