Barlow Tyrie · Teak & hand-wound chalk cord

Cocoon

Cocoon, designed by the British studio Astheimer, recasts the classic outdoor lounge with a hand-wound cord back that arcs from the floor up over the shoulders. The frame is FSC-certified plantation teak; the cord is a color-fast chalk all-weather Textilene, hand-wound at the Braintree workshop one chair at a time. The proportions are deliberately generous, deep seat, low arms, full enclosure, so the collection reads as much as architecture as furniture. Three pieces in the range: lounge chair, two-seater sofa and a matching ottoman.

About the Cocoon. collection by

The Cocoon. outdoor sits within 's permanent outdoor catalog, a position has held as a European specialty outdoor house with established US trade representation. Cocoon. is produced in specialty European outdoor materials matched to the brand's catalog tradition as part of 's premium European outdoor programme, with the configuration designed by 's in-house design team.

Material and construction notes

's outdoor pieces are built around specialty European outdoor materials matched to the brand's catalog tradition. For US trade specifiers, this means Cocoon. carries the same material data sheets and US-trade documentation as the rest of the catalog: ASTM F1858 outdoor furniture compliance where applicable, fire-code classification on cushion components, and chain-of-shipment documentation supplied with the invoice. Bespoke fabric or finish substitutions are accepted on COM workflow with confirmed yardage at quote stage; see the Sunbrella and Outdura specifier reference for the workflow at the European factory.

Specifying Cocoon. in US trade projects

Pricing for Cocoon. at US trade typically falls between on quote at US trade volumes, before fabric grade, finish premium, and consolidated freight. Lead time is 8-14 weeks from European factory to US port for standard configurations; bespoke dimensions, COM upholstery, or large hospitality volumes extend by 4-8 weeks. The collection is specified in US hospitality outdoor (boutique hotel terraces, resort pool decks, restaurant outdoor dining) and in premium residential outdoor (lake-house, pool-house, rooftop terrace) installations.

Frequently asked specifier questions

Care, warranty, and US service life

Premium European outdoor pieces share a common care pattern: quarterly rinse with clean water and mild soap, twice-yearly inspection of cushions and fittings, and off-season storage of soft goods in freeze-thaw climates. Structural elements (aluminum, FSC teak, steel) typically carry 5-10 year warranties; fabrics and cushions 2-3 years against UV and stitching. US service life on European premium outdoor is typically 15-25 years on structural elements and 5-10 years on cushions, with COM refresh extending the cycle. Documentation and warranty registration are supplied with the invoice at the trade tier.

Aftercare

How to care for Cocoon.

A five-step protocol from Barlow Tyrie's care manual, adapted for American climate ranges.

  1. Rinse the cord with fresh water monthly

A soft hose stream removes pollen, salt and dust from the hand-wound Textilene. The cord is UV-stable; monthly rinsing preserves the chalk color.

  2. Decide on the teak

Teak silvers naturally in 6 to 9 months. To hold the original honey tone, apply Barlow Tyrie Teak Care Set once at install and every spring; most hospitality clients let the wood weather.

  3. Cushion off-season storage

Sunbrella seat and back cushions are removable and machine-washable cold; store flat in a dry location during winter months.

  4. Avoid abrasive contact with the cord

The hand-wound cord is single-strand and can pill if dragged against rough textiles or pet claws. Use the supplied protective storage cover during prolonged absences.

  5. Annual joinery inspection

Mortise-and-tenon teak joinery is the same construction used on the brand's pre-war dining-room archive. Joints rarely loosen but a hex-key tightening service is available through Barlow Tyrie's Boston office.

Cocoon · FAQ

Specifying Cocoon.

Who designed Cocoon?

Astheimer, the British industrial-design house founded by Carsten Astheimer in 1996. Cocoon is their first collection for Barlow Tyrie and is intended to read as a piece of soft architecture rather than traditional outdoor seating.

Is the chalk cord available in other colors?

Yes. Standard is chalk; bespoke colorways available with a 4-piece minimum and 12–16 week lead-time. The cord is hand-wound at Braintree, so any custom color involves hand-winding by the same craftsmen.

Is Cocoon suitable for coastal exposure?

Yes. The cord is UV-stable and chloride-tolerant; teak is naturally salt-resistant. Cocoon is specified on coastal terraces from the Hamptons to the Florida Keys. See the Barlow Tyrie archive →

Can the cushions be specified in COM?

Yes. 2-meter sample required, outdoor double-rub rating ≥40,000, 4-week added lead-time. COM cushions are upholstered at the Braintree workshop.

Lead-time to the United States?

Stock: 8–14 weeks. Bespoke cord color: 12–16 weeks. Hospitality projects above 30 pieces are scheduled into dedicated production windows by the Boston distribution office.
