About the collection

Tama

Tama Ethimo and Valerio Sommella have reworked the traditional concept of side table to create a series of ‘precious’ single-material furnishing accessories.

Tama is a collection of coffee tables in enamelled ceramic with a pure simple design that belies their sophisticated production process, the result of carefully balanced essential aesthetics and high-quality artisan manufacture. Their Japanese name recalls the idea of something precious and harmonious and their circular, compact shape copies the silhouette of a typical African drum, suggesting a sense of sharing and rhythm.

Valerio Sommella is an Italian industrial designer, born in Cortona, Tuscany, and raised in Milan, where he graduated from the Design Department of Milan Polytechnic. He spent the initial years of his career working between Milan and Amsterdam before establishing Valerio Sommella Design Studio in 2009. He partners with Italian and international companies, designing a wide range of product typologies. Each project serves as an avenue for him to express his design philosophy, which delves into the language of objects through formal, material, and technological research. He perceives his creations not as chapters of the same book, but as short stories, each with its own plot, characters, and conclusion, all unified by a consistent narrative. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with renowned companies such as Alessi, Alcantara, Apple, Moooi, Nemo, Kdln, Honda, Falmec, Konica Minolta, Panasonic, RH, and many others.

About the Tama collection by Ethimo

Tama sits within the catalog of Ethimo, the Italian outdoor furniture house, and is designed by Valerio Sommella. Ethimo produces in Italy across specialty outdoor materials — teak, powder-coated aluminum, rope, ceramic, stone and outdoor fabrics — selected per collection, with established US trade representation.

Material and construction notes

For US trade specifiers, Tama carries the same material data sheets and US-trade documentation as the rest of the Ethimo catalog: ASTM F1858 outdoor furniture compliance where applicable, fire-code classification on cushion components, and chain-of-shipment documentation supplied with the invoice. Bespoke fabric or finish substitutions are accepted on COM workflow with confirmed yardage at quote stage; see the Sunbrella and Outdura specifier reference for the workflow at the European factory.

Specifying Tama in US trade projects

Net pricing for Tama is quoted at US trade volumes, before fabric grade, finish premium, and consolidated freight. Lead time is 8-14 weeks from the Italian factory to US port for standard configurations; bespoke dimensions, COM upholstery, or large hospitality volumes extend by 4-8 weeks. The collection is specified in US hospitality outdoor (boutique hotel terraces, resort pool decks, restaurant outdoor dining) and in premium residential outdoor (terrace, courtyard, poolside) installations.

Frequently asked specifier questions

Who designed the Ethimo Tama collection?

Tama is designed by Valerio Sommella, produced by Ethimo in Italy. Full material specifications, dimensions, and finish options are supplied on request with the trade quote.

Is the Ethimo Tama collection covered by trade pricing?

Yes. Ethimo runs a verified US trade programme. Net trade pricing for Tama is shared after qualification (designer of record, project scope) under the Ethimo trade terms applicable to premium European outdoor specifiers.

Can Tama be specified with COM fabric or bespoke dimensions?

Most Ethimo collections, including Tama, accept COM upholstery and bespoke dimensions within manufacturer tolerance. See the FF&E procurement workflow for the full COM and bespoke sequence, including fabric yardage, factory shipping, and lead-time impact.

Care, warranty, and US service life

Ethimo outdoor pieces share a common care pattern: quarterly rinse with clean water and mild soap, twice-yearly inspection of cushions and fittings, and off-season storage of soft goods in freeze-thaw climates. Structural elements (aluminum, FSC teak, steel, stone) typically carry 5-10 year warranties; fabrics and cushions 2-3 years against UV and stitching. US service life on Ethimo outdoor is typically 15-25 years on structural elements and 5-10 years on cushions, with COM refresh extending the cycle.
